I've got a secret.
To my astonishment, many portrait photographers don't seem to know about it, but it is the key to great childhood images. Would you like to know what it is?
When I first started this business, I was taught that a well-lit, forward facing, smiling image is (what's known in the industry as) a "salable print" - a print that will sell. After all, people like to remember their loved ones happy.
While this may be true for traditional methods of portrait photography, I have found (what seems obvious to me) that there is an ingredient in an image that people prefer even more than a well lit, forward facing, smile.
What is it? Well, in a word - personality.
I'm speaking of genuine, real life personality - not something forced, or faked in a studio, but the real thing.
I find even many of my clients (people who have seen my work and have chosen me as their photographer because they love my images) still don't fully understand this principle, but then it happens - that "ah-ha!" moment.
It generally starts something like this, "Help me choose." Normally, I hear this statement when a client is sitting with me to place their print order and they are torn between two similar images.
Realizing that my client doesn't fully understand why they are torn between the two images, I generally ask them one simple question - "Which one will mean more more to you, not just five to ten days from now, but in the next five to ten years?"
Then it happens... the light goes on and they realize what I've known all along... it's the one with personality.
Inevitably, they will choose the image that has that special something - something that (for whatever reason) exemplifies who their child really is at that moment in time - something that can't always be forced into a well lit, forward facing, smile.
While most photographers will speak of "memories to last a lifetime" (or something to that affect), I am convinced that nothing beats personality. This is who I am and why I do what I do.
So, one question remains - who will you choose to capture your images?
Please poke around this site. My photography is not for everyone. If I can be of service to you in finding a photographer other than myself, just let me know. If I have the honor of becoming your photographer then I thank you and I pledge to serve you to the best of my abilities. Either way, I look forward to serving your needs.
God's blessings,
